Top Geek Vacation Spots!

Published by jenniferea at 12:14 pm under General Edit This

Some of these are places I’ve been, and some places I wish I could go. The ranking is very scientific, with the formula including factors such as: cost, feasibility, how much you get to touch stuff, coolness, bragging rights and how much I want to go there. Very scientific I assure you.

Toronto

This is likely my Canadian blood showing through, but Toronto has a lot to offer a geek! There’s Polaris, the ROM, The Ontario Science Center (not just for kids!), EfstonScience Super Store, the Girl Geek Dinners if you’re of the female variety and want to hang with some of your own kind, Anime North, Fan Expo, the list goes on. Definately work a look at when planning your next vacation.

Tokyo

Tech and anime geeks can unite with this destination, but it’s also a great place to visit for the non-geeks, which can’t be said for some of the other destinations on our list. There’s so much culture and history to see here. Here is One guide for Tokyo, but I’d suggest you do plenty of research before actually going.

Antarctica

Yes, there is tourism in Antarctica! And it’s not as expensive as one might think, with a 10-14 day cruise costing about $8,000 - $10,000USD. Cool Antarctica has some great information on how to make this journey! Who can resist penguins?

Drumheller

Often called the Dinosaur Capital of the World, this place has a lot to offer the (armchair) palaeontologist. I spent all day here and only got to see a fraction of what was there. It’s not contained just within the building; you can explore the old dig sites. The Tyrrell Museum is extremely well designed, leading you along the path of evolution. There are also things for the non-geeks to do, but for the most part this place is known for its dinosaurs. If you happen to heading to Alberta anyway, be sure to take the time to visit here.

CERN

Who wouldn’t want to visit the world’s largest particle accelerator? CERN outreach gives you all the information you need to book your visit. There’s also The Globe to visit, and other events held by CERN.

Alpine Astrovillage
I hadn’t heard of this before researching this post, but now I want to go right now. Located in Switzerland, the Alpine Astrovillage is home to the center for amateur astrophotography. They provide the equipment, you take the pictures. You can also use your own camera assuming it can fit the telescope. Unfortunately the website is under construction, but they provide contact information for you to call if interested.

Cosmodôme

Located in Laval, Québec, this has to be the coolest place ever. It is aimed at kids, but their Space Camp would be the dream of any geek kid. They also have the Space Center for us older kids-at-heart. With a rich tourism industry, the non-geeks of your party will have plenty to do while you spin around until your nauseous.

I know I’ve missed plenty of geek tourist traps, so if you think I’ve really missed out on something, let me know!
