Oh Rocket Scientist, you are my eternal favourite. Seriously this blog is a great read, written by someone who uses the English language like a katana, rather than the blunt force weapon most of us treat it like. Plus the header is one of my favourite moon shots, which is an additional dose of happy.

If you have a blog, why aren’t you using EntreCard yet? Honestly, it’s like free traffic. A lot of people think that the majority of the traffic from this site is meaningless anyway, but I’ve found most of my favourite blogs through it! Yes there’s a few that I only visit because they keep visiting me, but the vast majority of them I read as I go through. Dropping doesn’t take that much time, and I generally do it in batches throughout the day.

As a side note, I am so glad February is over. I hate spelling that word.

100 posts!

Published by jenniferea under Off-topic Edit This

Wow! 100 posts since October 4th when I first started this blog, amazing!

I’m constantly astounded by how many regulars I have. It makes me feel really good knowing people enjoy my writing… especially since I have a book coming out soon!

I want to thank all my readers. Yes the dollar a post and the30 odd cents I get from traffic is nice, but focusing on that makes for some poor quality posts. I’m always thinking about what might interest you, I’m sure my friend have gotten sick of me bouncing ideas off them. While my work has been a bit more sporadic lately - bronchitis and a 7 course load have certainly impacted my free time - I hope the quality hasn’t suffered too much.

Ok, enough back patting… onto the back patting!

I’m currently waiting on a shipment of three hundred books. I was lying in bed this morning trying to do the math on how much space three hundred books would take up. Ok, so it turns out only to be like 2 square feet - 3, maybe 4, boxes. If you’re interested, check it out here.

So, recapping: 7 courses, 1 bronchitis, 300 books, 0.0003 free time :)

But…

Curing your Cold

Published by jenniferea under Off-topic Edit This

Under the category of strange but true… and most I still wouldn’t try… some supposed cold remedies!

Wet Socks
I can hear you now - Don’t wet socks CAUSE colds? Well first of all, no, they don’t. Being cold and damp can make you more susceptible to illness by lowering your immune system, but you still need exposure to the germs. Still, how does this one work?

First, soak your feet in warm water. Then soak some thin socks in cold water and put them on, followed by a pair of thick dry socks. The theory is it boosts circulation by drawing blood to your feet, which helps clear congestion.

Chocolate for Coughs
Again, not so sure about this one. One of the ingredients in cocoa is theobromine, which can suppress sensory nerves. This will sooth your throat, and might get rid of that tickle. However, I know that when I have a bad throat the last thing I want is something creamy.

Hot Tatty
This one might be better known; at least it is in my family. Dad suggest this one earlier today, and swears by it. Boil water and poor into a cup. Add a tablespoon of honey, a squirt of lemon juice, and a shot of rum, and breathe in the mix while drinking. Of course there’s a million and one ways to make this!

Chicken Soup
Full of warmth, fluids, vitamins, and salts, chicken soup is the ultimate cure for a cold. Most colds are viral and therefore antibiotics are useless. All you can do is keep your body strong so it can fight the bug for you.

Of course there’s always over-the-counter stuff, some of which has been around for decades!

Winners and coughing

First things first, naming my Roomba!

There were so many good ideas. My favourite ideas that while I couldn’t see myself calling it that, I liked none the less were: Q, JarJar, and Eke. I thought about Rosie, because it fits so well, but in my brain my Roomba is a boy (don’t ask, I’m not sure why). In the end I’ve decided to go with…

(drum roll)

Roofus! Submitted by Matt of Mattstratton.com. Thanks everyone for the chuckles and the great ideas!

Stay tuned! Tomorrow(ish) I will be posting the most insane cold/flu remedies I could find on the internet. I now retreat to my DM induced haze as I continue my battle against viral bronchitis.

Name my Roomba!

Published by jenniferea under Off-topic Edit This

So! This geek girl went and got herself a Roomba! Seriously, it’s only been one day and I’m in love with this thing. It’s somewhat distracting - in the sense that I’ll sit here and watch it go around. Kind of defeats the purpose?

So far we’ve been calling the Roomba… well… the Roomba. Poor thing. It really does need a proper name! So I put this out to you, all my good readers; name my Rooma! Winner gets the knowledge that I will be calling my little vacuuming robot by the name you’ve picked. And you get a free banner/square design if you want it :)

Internationally geeking

Published by jenniferea under Off-topic Edit This

I am slightly obsessed with my today.com stats. I check a few times a day how many hits I have and where they’re coming from. I’m always most interested with my search results, and have had a few surprises!

I knew my most popular post was the one I made on wedding cakes a while back, followed by the Geek Tattoos and DIY vinyl decals. These were picked up by a few places, so it makes sense that their google rankings are higher.

What does get me is some of the searches that do lead to my blog! Geek lover for one, and web geek. They’re surprising because they’re so general. Tattoos not to get leads to my geek tattoo post, and made me laugh. When geeks get tattoos also leads to it, but that makes sense. However two searches that lead to my blog which entirely confuse me are you step in the stream but the water has moved on and the ataris “what can i said”. Anyone care to shed some light on those?

Also interesting is the broad range of google nations that lead to me! Just in the past week I’ve had PT, IT, UK, CA, SK, KW, RO, GR, SG, PL and UY (Portugal, Italy, UK, Canada, Slovakia, Kuwait, Romania, Greece, Poland, and Uruguay). Yay for the World Wide Web!

Things and stuff

Published by jenniferea under Off-topic Edit This

Lately my distractions have been distracting me! Hopefully things smooth out soon and I’ll have more geeky fun to bring you!

One of my upcoming distractions (hopefully) will be knitting chainmail! I just ordered some 18g rings from The Ring Lord, which should be here in a week or so. I’ll be sure to take lots of pictures!

Another fun distraction is (shh) these Escape point-and-click games! I discover most of my games from the Online Games blog I found via entrecard. Even tho 99% of the time I end up going to the walkthrough for help, I just love these games!

I also wrote a short story for a provincial writing contest on short notice. I wasn’t going to enter, but next thing I knew I had a story done in less than 24 hours. Not my best work, but was certainly worth entering it!

MIA no more!

Published by jenniferea under Off-topic Edit This

Where have all the posties gone, looooong time passing.

Seriously though, where have they gone? I’ve fallen off the edge of the earth a little this past week, my blog isn’t the only thing which has suffered.

My main distraction has been the Winter-een-mas event I’ve been planning. Had half the expected participants but they stayed twice as long, so it evened out :D Have out hundreds of dollars in donated prizes, and a fun chaotic time was had by all.

Of course life doesn’t stop for an event like this, and the past week has been filled with a seemingly unending stream of assignments and paperwork. However ontop of WEMas being finished, a lot of the paper work for other projects has gone through.

Expect real posts soon!

Pluging

Published by jenniferea under Off-topic Edit This

My posting this week has been crap, busy + sickish + … lazy makes for a quite time. I’ve been quite busy preparing for Winter-een-mas (if you’re in the Newfoundland area check us out), as well as usual school crap, and lovely bureaucratic red tape.

So lacking any creativity on my end at this moment, here’s some plugs!

Yea… I’m not really sure either? Anyway, the real plugs.

From Twilight
Written by a friend of mine, it defines an interesting read. Yea, there really isn’t any other way to describe it, but interesting doesn’t really do it justice. Bookmark for sure!

Convention Fans
Very well written look at geek conventions; from information about the cons themselves, costuming, tips and tricks, and more. If you have even the slightest interest in science fiction or anime, you’ll need to visit here.

You’ve Got Maille
I’ll admit, it was the cute title that first interested me in this blog. I’m also a closet maille lover, and fully intend to start maille knitting when my time and budget allows. Until then, this blog is full of pics, ideas, and really cool stuff. Be warned, it might be slightly addictive.

The Girly Anti-Geek
Now you might ask, why on earth would I be linking a blog with this title? (And upon double checking the URL, I noticed that she link me!.. on the 19th. I really have been out of the blogging circle a bit.) Anyway, many of us wish to be geekier, in the sense we can figure out why the hell that light is flashing, and why is my phone making that noise! It can be frustrating when your techier friends make technology seem as simple as breathing, but have no fear, The Girly Anti-Geek is here to remind you that knowing how to tell time in binary ISN’T normal.

What kind of geek are you?

Published by jenniferea under Off-topic Edit This

Decided to take the weekend to RELAX. Seems to have worked a bit, my energy level has improved. I did run across a cute quiz that I’d like to share: What kind of geek are you?

My result? Code Geek!

code geek

What can I said? I love taking these types of things. I don’t really agree with the result, but I guess it does fit me. My major geek is web design, which is kind of like programming? And I often with I could program… everything to do boring repetitive tasks LOL! I was famous for having a ton of stuff programmed on my graphing calculator in high school, and even now I have a few things on it. Such has one for keeping track of Yu-gi-oh scores but we won’t get into that!
